What's Left Of Me by Kat Zhang

Who would you give up to stay alive?

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else - two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbours shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable - Hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

I received an ARC copy of What’s Left Of Me by Kat Zhang for review from HarperTeen, which I absolutely loved reading! The concept of “two souls woven together in one body” and the souls “settling” reminded me a bit of The Host by Stephanie Meyer. I loved reading about both Eva & Addie and their unique personalities and opinions. One of my favourite parts of the book was reading about the other Hybrids, how they compared to Eva & Addie and how they were viewed within their local community, as well as in society as a whole. My favourite character was Eva, because despite Addie being the one “on the surface”, Eva is the one who is more confident, determined and outgoing, mainly due to the short amount of time she has to express herself through their shared body. I love the cover of What’s Left Of Me by Kat Zhang, as it represents Addie & Eva well, as if Addie were without Eva, (or Eva were without Addie), they would feel as if they were only half of who they were supposed to be.
