Earth Star is the second book in the Earth Girl series.
18-year-old
Jarra has a lot to prove. After being awarded one of the military’s highest
honours for her role in a daring rescue attempt, Jarra finds herself - and her
Ape status - in the spotlight. Jarra is one of the unlucky few born with an
immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Derided as an ‘ape’ - a
‘throwback’ - by the rest of the universe, Jarra is on a mission to prove that
Earth Girls are just as good as anyone else.
Except now the planet she loves is under threat by what could be humanity’s first ever alien contact. Jarra’s bravery - and specialist knowledge - will once again be at the centre of the maelstrom, but will the rest of the universe consider Earth worth fighting for?

I enjoyed reading Earth Star by Janet Edwards, which I
received for review from both Netgalley and Harper Voyager, but unfortunately
it just wasn't as good as Earth Girl, the first book in the series. Earth Star focused
more on the alien contact and how the military reacted, rather than solely on
Jarra. The various types of Twoing contracts were covered more in this book, I
especially liked the idea of the Twoing rings. The Twoing rings themselves represented
not only the couple's taste, but also their lifestyles and how committed they
were to one another. Not much new technology was revealed in Earth Star, except
for Flowgold. Flowgold was used for Twoing rings, normally for people on dig
sites who wore impact suits, as Flowgold moulded to the wearer's skin! I found
the twist at the end of Earth Star interesting, but again it seemed that Jarra
and some of the characters that were in the previous book, Earth Girl, such as
Jarra's Pro Mum, weren't featured enough. I love the cover of Earth Star by
Janet Edwards! It's inkeeping with the cover of Earth Girl, whilst also still
depicting an important scene within Earth Star.
