I received Saving June by Hannah Harrington from Mira Ink for review. I really enjoyed reading Saving June, even though it wasn’t what I had initially expected. From the blurb, I had expected it to be quite raw, edgy and controversial, but it was actually fairly tame compared to some other YA books within the same genre, (such as Entangled & Torn by Cat Clarke and Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver). My favourite character was Harper because of her brutal honesty, wit and sarcasm which made what potentially could have been a very morbid, depressing book into an essential, summery read for all ages! I really like the cover of Saving June as it not only portrays an actual event within the book but, it also represents Harper’s ongoing concealment of her feelings towards both her sister and her sister’s death.

Through My Letterbox! 12/07/12

What came Through My Letterbox this week:

This week, my mum bought Uglies & Pretties by Scott Westerfeld from Asda. We have been trying to get the Uglies series for a while,

My mum also bought Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake, Blood Red Road by Moira Young and A Witch In Love by Ruth Warburton from Asda!

We received an ARC of Debutantes by Cora Harrison from Macmillan.

We also received an ARC of Spark by Amy Kathleen Ryan from St Martin's Press. Spark is the second book in the Sky Chasers series. I really enjoyed reading Glow, (the first book in the Sky Chasers series), my review is here!

I really enjoyed reading Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky! I loved reading about the digital, “safe” life that Katie Kacvinsky created in this book, as well as it’s consequences! For me Awaken was a cross between The Academie by Amy Joy and Delirium by Lauren Oliver. Even though at times she was a bit too needy and “plugged-in”, my favourite character was Maddie, because of her rebelliousness and stubborn nature. I love the cover of Awaken, it combines both the natural and digital aspects from within the story and depicts them beautifully! I really like how the pixelated effect is coupled with the simple, yellow flower trapped in the jar, much like the how some of the characters are trapped in their digital worlds!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The List by Siobhan Vivian! My favourite character was Sarah, as even though she was one of the four “Ugly” girls on The List, she didn’t complain or try to gain sympathy from her classmates. She planned to get even instead! I really liked how the actual List was pictured at the start of the book, as sometimes when the point of view changed over and became a bit confusing, it was easier to locate The List (and therefore easier to quickly recap who was who!). I love the cover of The List! Whilst being relevant to the story within, the cover also doesn’t give too much away, and could represent any one of the girls on The List at multiple times throughout the book. The List by Siobhan Vivian is one of the few books that I would happily re-read over and over again! I would definitely recommend this book!
